I have read several of your articles on the U-DISE data, which I am currently analysing as part of a research project. As the leading expert on this dataset, I was hoping you might be able to provide insight into the way this dataset is produced and answer some my questions around coverage (especially of private schools), reliability, longitudinal consistency etc during my next visit to India.

I am from Visakhapatnam, AP. I read Your web-page and read all the items regarding GER. You mentioned that GER of all states with regard to UDISE 2021-2022 but not of the year 2023-24. Please also let me know how can I calculate projected child population to find the Net enrollment ratio and Adjusted-Net Enrollment Ratio, please guide, I have to calculate for Visakhapatnam District....Thank you once again.
Admin Reply by: admin
The Ministry of Education is to release GER for the year 2022-23 and 2023-24 but the Andhra Pradesh state has got access to this set of data, please get in touch with the District and State MIS Co-ordinator of your district. Yes, you can project child population, please go through the website, you will get the methodology of projecting the same of your district. Keep watching Education for All in India and https://udiseplus.gov.in for updated information. Thanks for observations!

Dear Dr Mehta: The UDISE+ 2021-22 data reveals that the overall dropout rate in schools in India is 1.5 percent, which is lower than the previous year’s rate of 1.8 percent. However, the rate is still a concern, especially in certain states." I find that statement to not be consistent with what you also say : "The dropout rate is highest at the secondary level (9-10) with 12.6 percent, followed by upper primary (6-8) with 3 percent and primary (1-5) with 1.5 percent."
Admin Reply by: admin
Thanks for pointing it out. You are correct, 1.5 percent dropout rate is at primary level and not the overall dropout rate. With regard to your observations “I suspect that the high school completion rate for India, measured by how many should have, based on population data, completed high school and how many actually did is more like 20%.” The dropout rate is calculated based on two years (ex. 2020-21 & 2021-22) grade-wise enrolment and grade-wise number of repeaters in the current year (ex. 2021-22). Based on this the average annual dropout rate is calculated which means this much percentage of children those who were in the system couldn’t remain and dropped out from the system before completion of that level of education. One can also have a look at transition and retention rates.
